The Southern Folklife Collection Festival this Saturday at Carrboro’s Cat’s Cradle features the Dex Romweber Duo, Flaco Jiménez, Los Texmaniacs and Sierra Hull. Admission is free with a ticket. Festival hours are 10am to 4pm.
Accordionist Jiménez, a pioneer of conjunto music, is known to many for his work with Ry Cooder, and has played with Dr. John, David Lindley, Peter Rowan and Bob Dylan. Saturday he’s with Los Texmaniacs, whose music is described as “a hefty helping of Tex Mex conjunto, with several parts Texas rock, a dash of well-cured blues, and R&B riffs.”
Romweber is the former frontman for the psycho-surf-rockabilly-garage-punk combo Flat Duo Jets. He & sister Sara (Mitch Easter, Lets Active, Snatches of Pink) on drums form the Dex Romweber Duo, which “specializes in music plucked with the soul and faith of a Sunday morning revival, a fluid mix of blues, surf-rock, rockabilly, proto-rock & roll and garage.”
Bluegrass singer, mandolinist and guitarist Sierra Hull played with Alison Krauss at age 13 at the Grand Ole Opry and has received 6 International Bluegrass Music Award “Mandolinist of the Year” nominations.
