Country music legend Willie Nelson will celebrate 8 decades on Earth today by — what else — playing a concert. Nelson, whose birthday is April 30 according to his birth certificate (he claims April 29), is scheduled to play in Estero, FL, the first of 5 consecutive shows before a day off on Sunday. This week’s run includes a May 3 performance at Jazz Fest in New Orleans. For a guy who spends around 200 days a year on the road, it’s all par for the course.
Nelson kicked off his birthday festivities with an April 18 celebration with folks like Neil Young, Norah Jones, Sheryl Crow & Leon Russell during a CMT Crossroads recording. The episode is expected to air in late June. His annual birthday bash in Austin was April 28. Proceeds from that concert will benefit victims of the fertilizer explosion in West, Texas, a few miles from where Nelson grew up, in the tiny town of Abbott.
